Attorney Jailed For Not Reciting The Pledge

In right wing lunacy on October 7, 2010 at 7:18 pm

Tupelo, Mississippi Chancery Judge Talmadge Littlejohn told the people in his courtroom to stand and recite the Pledge of Allegiance yesterday.

 Danny Lampley, an attorney, stood as ordered, but failed to recite the Pledge, in fact, he refused to do so.  Judge Littlejohn ordered Lampley held in contempt of court until such time as he “shall purge himself of said criminal contempt by complying with the order of this Court by standing and reciting the Pledge of Allegiance in open court.”

Lampley served a total of five hours in jail on the contempt charge when the judge ordered his release because Lampley was scheduled to represent a client.

Consider carefully the words which the Judge ordered Lampley to recite;

“I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands, one Nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.”

These are solemn words which should not be spoken lightly.  The Pledge has great meaning when free citizens recite it of their own free will, it means nothing when they are coerced into repeating them.  This Judge cheapens the Pledge when he forces people to recite it under pain of imprisonment.

The hypocrisy of Judge Littlejohn’s action is obvious.
