Media: Open Thread

The AP and CBS photoshopped this picture of Obama, half white and half black, with Democrat leaders over his shoulder on his black side, and Republican leaders over his white.

The photo is causing a stir.  CBS defends the photo by saying, “Our intention with the ‘ripped paper’ overlay effect down the middle was to convey a divided Congress and nothing more.”  Bernie Sanders!

Racist?  You know if Fox News had done it, it would be denounced as such.

Keith Olbermann Suspended from MSNBC

In Jackasses, Keith Olbermann, left wing lunacy, Media on November 5, 2010 at 6:43 pm

The latest casualty of the Tuesday’s election is,… Keith Olbermann?

Seems Olbermann violated NBC’s ethics rules by donating money to political candidates, Democrats, of course.  Olbermann gave $2,400, the maximum contribution allowed for an individual contribution to a candidate, to Representatives Raul Grijalva, Gabrielle Giffords of Arizona, and Attorney General Jack Conway of Kentucky.

Olbermann, who acknowledged making the donations, has been suspended indefinitely.

“Keith Olbermann, the pre-eminent liberal voice on American television, was suspended Friday after his employer, MSNBC, discovered that he made campaign contributions to three Democrats last month.”

“The indefinite suspension was a stark display of the clash between objective journalism and opinion journalism on television.”

“The MSNBC president, Phil Griffin, issued a statement saying: ‘I became aware of Keith’s political contributions late last night. Mindful of NBC News policy and standards, I have suspended him indefinitely without pay.’ ”

I am certainly not a fan of Mr. Olbermann, that being said,  I find myself in the unfamiliar and uncomfortable position of having to defend him.  The fact of the matter is that NBC’s ethics policy is presumably in place to protect NBC’s image as an unbiased and objective news organization.  Very few individuals are so blind as to think of NBC’s news reporting  as ‘objective and unbiased’, and certainly no one could make that claim on Olbermann’s behalf and maintain a straight face.

News Corporation, the parent company of Fox News has made substantial donations to the GOP, but they have also donated substantially to Democrats.  Fox News allows its employees and contributors, as private citizens, to donate time and money to political campaigns and causes, why shouldn’t Olbermann be allowed the same freedom?

If NBC is concerned about the public perception of its journalistic objectivity, perhaps they should stop trying to appear unbiased and objective, and actually be unbiased and objective.  Perhaps then they will be able to allow their employees to act according to their own conscience as private citizens.

Guilt by Association

U.S. Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-FL 20), campaigning on behalf of fellow progressive wack job Ron Klein (D-FL 22), launched a vicious attack on Ron’s conservative Republican opponent, Allen West, calling him anti-woman.

 According to Wasserman Schultz;

“It’s no secret that Ron [Klein]’s opponent, Allen West, is a self-described ‘right wing extremist.’ In fact, he wears his extreme disrespect as a badge of honor,” Wasserman Schultz said. She said West believes it’s “OK to objectify and denigrate women. He thinks it’s OK to take away our reproductive freedom. He thinks it’s OK to associate with people who refer to women as ‘oral relief stations.’”

Why is Wasserman Schultz saying these outrageous things? What is her evidence that these are the feelings of West towards women? Because West has writes a column for a Miami biker magazine in which others, not West, have expressed these views toward women.

In 2002 Rolling Stone Magazine ran an ad which extolled the value of Satan’s influence on the youth of America.  The ad was titled “666 PENTAlicious”.  See here and here.

Using the logic of Wasserman Schultz, we can absolutely assert that Barack Obama has Satanist sympathies and approves of the corruption of teens by the Dark Lord by virtue of his appearance and association with Rolling Stone Magazine.

O’Donnell or Greene: Who’s the Bigger Moron

In Jackasses, left wing lunacy on October 19, 2010 at 9:14 pm

We are all familiar with the debating tactic known as a ‘talking point’.  Typically, when a candidate appears for an interview he has prepared in advance a number of talking points related to a number of top issues or as a response to anticipated questions.

During a recent interview on MSNBC, Alvin Greene apparently prepared only one talking point which he repeated ad nauseam.  To nearly every question put to him by Lawrence O’Donnell, Mr. Greene responded by pointing out that Jim DeMint started the recession.

Actually, this extremely awkward interview was a new personal best for Mr. Greene.  But, be that as it may, why after spending five full minutes with a candidate who is incapable of articulating an original cogent thought would Lawrence O’Donnell then endorse said candidate; I mean, other than the fact that O’Donnell is a piece-of-crap progressive working for the state run media?

Jerry Brown: “Welfare For All!”

In left wing lunacy on October 15, 2010 at 8:18 pm

Jerry Brown, California’s Democratic gubernatorial candidate, once said, “If it babbles and its eyeballs are glazed, it probably comes from California.”

Jerry ‘Governor Moonbeam’ Brown ought to know, he has done a fair share of babbling himself.  Take for example this bit of twaddle from his Pacifica Radio show in 1995:

“The conventional viewpoint says we need a jobs program and we need to cut welfare. Just the opposite! We need more welfare and fewer jobs. Jobs for every American is doomed to failure because of modern automation and production. We ought to recognize it and create an income-maintenance system so every single American has the dignity and the wherewithal for shelter, basic food, and medical care. I’m talking about welfare for all. Without it, you’re going to have warfare for all.”

Seriously, the only thing loonier than a ‘has been’ progressive Democrat, is a senile old coot of a ‘has been’ progressive Democrat.

Witch Doctors and Shamans Keeping Obama Safe

In left wing lunacy, Obama on October 14, 2010 at 6:25 pm

Michelle Obama was being interviewed on the Tom Joyner Morning Show and said something that seems a little odd.  She said, “It means all the world to us to know that there are prayer circles out there and people who are keeping the spirits clean around us.”  Yes, you read that right!  She actually said, “keeping the spirits clean around us”.  Listen to it for yourself.

From this statement we can justifiably infer some things.  We can infer them because Michelle Obama has implied them.  If there are ‘clean spirits’, it necessarily implies that there are ‘unclean spirits’.  If there are people who are responsible for keeping the spirits around the Obamas ‘clean’, it necessarily implies that they are keeping the ‘unclean spirits’ away.  Additionally, these individuals who are keeping the ‘unclean spirits’ away, must have the ability to do that by virtue of the fact that Mrs. Obama implies that they have been successful in keeping the spirits around them limited to ‘clean spirits’.

So who are these individuals who have the power to ward off ‘unclean spirits’.  In the belief system known as ‘animism’, there are those who have the power to ward off  ‘unclean spirits’; they are refered to as, witch doctors, medicine men, or shamans.  We must conclude from Mrs. Obama’s statement that there are individuals with the power over the spirits of this world who have generously donated their time in an effort to protect the Obamas from ‘unclean spirits’.  How special!

Unfortunately, it appears that they seem not to have much influence over angry taxpayers.

Does Somebody Need A Straight Jacket?

In left wing lunacy on October 12, 2010 at 9:22 pm

Charles Philip Arthur George, full-time prince of Wales, part-time ‘global warming’ wackjob, has written a new book in which he hails the Mumbai shantytown backdrop for the movie “Slumdog Millionaire”, as a model for western life.

In the book, which is titled Harmony, Prince Charles writes that the Dharavi slum, the largest in Asia, is better organized than most Western communities and is a model of eco-efficiency.

“We have a great deal to learn about how complex systems can self-organise to create a harmonious whole,” he said. “The real lesson I took from Dharavi was about the vast asset we can call ‘community capital.'”

There is no word as to when the Prince of Pontification plans to leave his “40,000-square-foot town house” to share “300 square feet of floor with 15 humans and an uncounted number of mice”.

Political Insanity Reigns Supreme

In left wing lunacy, right wing lunacy on October 10, 2010 at 5:55 pm

The Atlantic magazine reported last week that Ohio GOP candidate and Tea Party favorite Rich Iott (center of the photograph) has participated in WWII battle reenactments wearing a Waffen-SS uniform since 2003.

Iott is drawing criticism from all sides for his reenactment participation as a German SS soldier despite the fact that Iott has also participated in reenactments as a Civil War Union infantryman, a World War I dough boy and World War II American infantryman and paratrooper.  Rep. Eric Cantor (R-VA) and Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-FL) appeared on ‘Fox News Sunday’ and both condemned Iott for having chosen to take part in reenactments as a member of the Nazi 5th SS Panzer Division.

I am certain that the condemnation is a political necessity given that some might be offended by what Iott chose to do with his leisure time.  However, it must be noted that since everyone must have an ancestor who was victimized to some extent by someone at some point in history, it is difficult to do anything of a historic nature, or even at a historic site, without offending someone.  These days it is impossible to hold any political, religious, philosophical, or historical view-point by which no one will be offended.  That is just the way things are.

The insanity is in the consideration of everyone’s intolerant sensibilities as if they are rational and justified, even to the extent that one cannot discuss God at a ‘sacred spot’, or the wearing of religious jewelry or emblems in certain places, or even affix certain bumper stickers to your vehicle.  These are symptoms of a society driving itself into insanity in a futile effort to avoid giving offence.

Much of the reaction to real or imagined offences are based on an odd form of situational morality.  If  Mr. Iott had been a Hollywood  actor playing a Nazi SS officer (or even Hitler himself) in a film reenactment, I doubt very much if either Cantor or Wasserman Schultz would have offered any criticism of his involvement.

Mr. Iott says that he chose to participate in the reenactments with his son as a bonding experience and that he chose the 5th SS Panzer Division Wiking because they fought mainly on the eastern front against the Russian Red Army, and not U.S. or British soldiers.

In any battle reenactment, someone must play the bad guy.  Is Iott is being criticised for having played the bad guy?  Between the Red Army under Stalin and the Nazis under Hitler, who is the bad guy?  Stalin murdered at least 30 million people before Hitler began his extermination of Jews and gypsies.  Stalin starved to death or executed one-quarter of the Ukrainian population. Stalin was far and away the greater mass murderer, and yet , of the two, Hitler has become the more notorious and hated.  I assume that if Iott had chosen to take part on the Red Army side he would not now be condemned for having done so.  Insanity, pure insanity.

A Story of Two Rallys

In left wing lunacy on October 3, 2010 at 5:15 pm

‘One Nation Working Together’ had something to prove.

The left has realized that if they want to hold onto the progressive dream of ‘fundamentally transforming’ America into a progressive utopia (oxymoron) in this politically toxic environment, that they were going to have to fight for it.  Thus ‘One Nation’ was conceived as the progressive’s response to the ‘Tea Parties’.  Some 400 organizations, many of which are progressive left and communist left, sponsored yesterday’s rally on the DC Mall.

One of the stated goals of the rally was to prove that the left could stage an event that would be bigger than Glenn Becks ‘Restoring Honor’ rally on 8/28.  In fact, they could not wait to make that claim, and announced at the rally that a ‘satellite image’ proved that their rally was bigger than Glenn Beck’s.  And where is satellite image?  Have they posted it on their website?Does it even exist?  Nevertheless, the left throughout the blogosphere could not wait to gloat about it.

The problem with their claim, is that it wasn’t true.  Even the AP disputed the assertion.

“Organizers claimed they had as many participants as Beck’s rally. But Saturday‘s crowds were less dense and didn’t reach as far to the edges as they did during Beck’s rally. The National Park Service stopped providing official crowd estimates in the 1990s.”

But, one does not need the National Park Service estimates or fictitious satellite images to determine if one rally was bigger than another, one only needs to do a photo comparison from the same perspective, in this case, the Washington Monument.

One Nation Rally Photo

Glenn Beck’s ‘Restoring Honor’ Rally Photo

Really, no comparison at all.  The AP had it nearly correct, rather than describe the One Nation rally attendance as “less dense”, the AP should have said ‘pathetically dense’.

One other comparison that is worth pointing out.  The left knew, or should have known, that the right was eagerly waiting to see what kind of shape the ‘lefties’ would leave the DC Mall in once they were done with it.  The attendees of the Beck rally cleaned up after themselves, and since the left has a history of being ‘pigs’, they should have been prepared to do better this time.  So did they?  Hell, no!

All of which proves that it is better to be a clean, respectful, Tea Partier than a filthy, commie, pig.

A Candid Video from the Eco-Progressives

In left wing lunacy on October 1, 2010 at 8:28 pm

One of the characteristics of progressives over the last 100 years is a strong tendency to deal with their opposition through a campaign of attrition.  One of the more passive methods to accomplish this, is through the practice of ‘eugenics’, the forced sterilization of undesirable citizens.

“Someday we will realize that the prime duty, the inescapable duty, of the good citizen of the right type is to leave his or her blood behind him in the world; and that we have no business to permit the perpetuation of citizens of the wrong type.”  – Theodore Roosevelt, in a letter to Charles Davenport , 1913

Most progressives have simply employed a more direct and immediate approach to the problem, namely, murder.  Communist regimes killed more than 90 million human beings through execution and forced starvation.  If you add those killed by the German national socialists, the number rises to over 120 million.

The eco-progressives at 10:10 recently produced a video that betrays their desire to execute ‘climate change’ non-believers in a most horrendous way.

The video has now been removed from the 10:10 website and the following apology (sort of) has been posted;

Today we put up a mini-movie about 10:10 and climate change called ‘No Pressure’.

With climate change becoming increasingly threatening, and decreasingly talked about in the media, we wanted to find a way to bring this critical issue back into the headlines whilst making people laugh. We were therefore delighted when Britain’s leading comedy writer, Richard Curtis – writer of Blackadder, Four Weddings, Notting Hill and many others – agreed to write a short film for the 10:10 campaign. Many people found the resulting film extremely funny, but unfortunately some didn’t and we sincerely apologise to anybody we have offended.

As a result of these concerns we’ve taken it off our website. We won’t be making any attempt to censor or remove other versions currently in circulation on the internet.

We’d like to thank the 50+ film professionals and 40+ actors and extras and who gave their time and equipment to the film for free. We greatly value your contributions and the tremendous enthusiasm and professionalism you brought to the project.

At 10:10 we’re all about trying new and creative ways of getting people to take action on climate change. Unfortunately in this instance we missed the mark. Oh well, we live and learn.

Onwards and upwards,

Franny, Lizzie, Eugenie and the whole 10:10 team

UPDATE, 10/03/10:

Hot Air blog has posted the inevitable remix of the 10:10 video, with an Osama Bin Ladin endorsement at the end.  See it here.
